No One Should Go Hungry
Most of the nearly 5,000 clients JFS serves rely on SNAP food assistance and may not be able to feed their families next week because of the government shut down. More than half of all people who receive SNAP benefits in Washington State are families with children.
JFS is here to ensure that none of our clients go hungry. Thanks to you and our generous community, we can act quickly and address our clients’ urgent needs. When government aid falls short, we step up together. We are giving $150 grocery gift cards to the nearly 1,300 clients who have the greatest need for food assistance. We need your help to make sure we can provide food for our neighbors.
Our clients are already struggling with inflation, job losses, and slashes to our country’s social safety net. They are being forced to make impossible choices—between food and rent, medication and meals. They come to JFS knowing they will be welcomed with dignity and served with compassion. Visits to the Polack Food Bank have been surging this year (a 35% increase compared to six months ago) and we expect the demand to continue to skyrocket, outpacing the ability of our region’s food banks to meet the need. If SNAP benefits for November are funded at the last minute, donations raised for gift cards will support Polack Food Bank clients.
Help us ensure Holocaust survivors and Jewish elders, people with cognitive disabilities, survivors of trafficking and other vulnerable youth, unpaid family caregivers, survivors of domestic violence, people who have experienced an unexpected financial shock, refugees, and immigrants don’t go hungry:
- $150 will ensure an elderly Holocaust survivor has food to eat
- $300 will help a single parent with an infant buy essential foods to support healthy growth
- $600 will provide nutrition for a family of four refugees who came here to find safety and stability
- $1,500 will help 10 of our neighbors, like the ones mentioned above, buy food and prevent hunger in our community
