Virtual Mental Health First Aid (FULL)

Mental Health First Aid is a free course that gives adults the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide until appropriate professional help arrives.

In the Mental Health First Aid course, participants will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and substance use concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. The course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of specific illnesses, such as, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorder. Additionally, this training includes step-by-step instructions on how to respond to an opioid overdose, including how to administer naloxone. All participants receive a manual to complement the course material and resource handouts.

Currently, virtual MHFA is an expanded pilot program and at JFS we will begin offering both the Adult and Youth curriculums in a completely virtual classroom. As of August 3, 2020, this training is officially at capacity. Please consider joining us for a future Adult Mental Health First Aid training.  We also encourage you to check back on our website regularly for the latest updates on our events and how they will be impacted given the circumstances.

This training is partially funded by King County MIDD.
