In 1889, just five months and five days after the Great Seattle Fire, the United States Congress carved the State of Washington out of what had once been the Oregon Territory.
Three years later, before the Great Northern Railway's transcontinental line had even reached Seattle, a group of 37 local women came together, reaching out to the hundreds of European and Mediterranean Jews arriving in the American West. Thus, Seattle's Jewish Family Service was off and running. That was 1892...and we've never looked back.
