Who We Serve
The Jewish Family Service Food Bank is a member of the Seattle Food Committee and the King County Food Coalition. We serve people of all backgrounds who live in zip codes 98121, 98122, 98101, 98112 and Jewish people who live in the Greater Seattle area and on the Eastside.
Frequency of Visits
Most people use the Food Bank one time per month. If you have exceptional circumstances, please contact an Emergency Services Case Manager at (206) 461-3240 to discuss your specific needs.
ID/Intake
Come to the Food Bank prepared to show ID with your current address. If you do not use the Food Bank for several months in a row, you may be asked to complete a new Intake Data Sheet.
Type of Food Distributed
Households receive one basic bag that usually includes: one can each of tuna, vegetables, fruit and tomatoes, as well as pasta, rice, cooking oil, bar soap and toilet paper. Households get a second bag of “specials,” which may include: fresh produce, bread, and frozen items such as fish, potatoes and dessert products. As with all food banks, we cannot guarantee the quality of food distributed, although our goal is to distribute nutritious food of good quality.
United Way & Statistics
Jewish Family Service of Seattle is a United Way of King County recipient agency. Once a year, we submit statistical information to United Way. This includes results of a customer satisfaction survey. All Food Bank visitors are asked to complete this survey once a year. Each month we are asked to give basic statistical information about Food Bank usage to one of the agencies from which we receive free food and to the city of Seattle. Names are not included with any of this information.
Volunteers
Volunteers assist with many aspects of our Program. Often a volunteer will be in training. Please be patient as the volunteer becomes familiar with our procedures. Occasionally we may recruit new volunteers. If you see a notice posted, please consider helping out if you are available.
Jewish Holidays and Closures
Jewish Family Service observes all Jewish holidays as well as most federal and state holidays. This means that the agency and Food Bank will be closed in observance of those holidays. Every effort is made to give one full month’s notice for a closure.
For Jewish holidays that require it, special holiday food is offered to those who celebrate the holiday. As an example, we give a bag of Passover products to Jewish clients during that holiday. If you keep a kosher kitchen, or have other dietary needs, please discuss your needs with our Food Bank staff.
