Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behaviors used to gain and maintain power and control over an intimate partner. It may include threats, intimidation, emotional or sexual abuse, economic control, isolation, or physical violence. As a community, it is our responsibility to protect our members so that each one of us can truly live in peace without fear and threat of violence.
Jewish Family Service of Seattle facilitates a Jewish communal response to domestic violence. We collaborate with local Jewish organizations, synagogues, domestic violence programs and other concerned agencies and individuals to make services accessible and sensitive to Jewish families. Our internationally recognized program is based upon:
Outreach
- Consultation, training and materials to rabbis and Jewish communal professionals
- Domestic violence educational workshops and presentations for schools, organizations and agencies within the Jewish community
- Community networking, organizing and resource-sharing
- Youth outreach & education about dating violence prevention in Jewish schools
Response
- Assisting Jewish organizations with addressing domestic violence situations
- Consultation to domestic violence service providers about the particular needs of Jewish families
- Support groups for Jewish women with controlling partners
- Jewish healing rituals for women who have experienced abuse from an intimate partner
- Kids’ Club: a 12-week curriculum to support children who have witnessed domestic violence
Advocacy
- Confidential advocacy-based counseling sessions
- Education to provide perspective and a larger context within which a survivor’s experience can be understood
- Non-judgmental exploration of options
- Referrals to a network of community resources
