The Midah of Compassion
For Parents of Children Up to 12 Years Old
Parents want their children to grow up with good values and a strong character—and we know that the primary way children learn this is by watching us! Become more aware of how you are handling emotions and expressing your beliefs. Our discussion will be guided by the teachings of Musar, traditional Jewish literature focused on exploring and improving one’s character. Musar emphasizes personal ethics and balance that can be incorporated into a variety of parenting styles. Presented by Rabbi Yohanna Kinberg of Temple B’nai Torah and Marjorie Schnyder, MSW, of Jewish Family Service.

Jewish Family Service’s annual benefit Luncheon is the Agency’s second largest source of annual revenue from private donations. Last year, more than 1,100 guests donated nearly $500,000 to support crucial social service programs and services of JFS. Thanks to corporate sponsorships that underwrote the Luncheon’s expenses, all of the donor dollars raised supported critical assistance to thousands of people challenged by poverty, aging, disability, domestic violence, developmental disabilities and mental illness, and resettlement. Attendance at JFS’ annual Community of Caring Luncheon depends upon the enthusiastic efforts of the event’s table captains, whose personal invitations result in a ballroom full of guests and supporters.

Our tradition at Passover speaks of getting through the narrow places, Mizrayim. Many families in our community are in the narrow place of a serious illness such as cancer. This workshop explores the difficult questions that arise when a parent is very sick with cancer or another serious illness. What do children want and need to know? How are parenting roles and dynamics impacted? How can we support parents as they cope with their illness and take care of their child on a daily basis?
Please join us for this important discussion for parents, friends and family, congregation and community members, and professionals that work with parents and children.
With guest facilitators Ellen Zahlis, MN and Mary Ellen Shands, RN, MN from Cancer Lifeline.

In 1975, when Jeannette Lozovsky left the USSR, she arrived in the United States with her husband, two small children, few job prospects, and no English—but she arrived with determination and amazing courage. The Jewish community in Dallas helped resettle the family. It is from the kindness and help she received there, that Jeannette was determined to give something back to the Jewish Community. Jeannette is a woman who literally and figuratively embodies the ideal: “What goes around comes around.”
With love and a passion for her work, she has helped other refuges and immigrants face the challenges of a new life in a new land, just as she had. Who better to help other immigrants and refugees, than someone who had faced similar challenges? Meet Jeanette, hear her story, understand the depth of her commitment to others, and learn how a kindness in 1975, has come around with 18-½ years of giving to so many others.

“Uncovering the Layers of Lag B’Omer”
As history slowly reveals itself, it deposits layer upon layer of meaning on the past. What once may have been a happy time appears bittersweet at another. The same is true for our own experiences. As our lives slowly unfold, we look back and can reinterpret different moments
in our lives. Sometimes events ripen in meaning, and sometimes they alter more dramatically.
We will look at this minor Jewish holiday, its history, and move onto a reflection of our own personal stories with Rivy as our guide.
